Comfortable & Accessible Cruising

Short distances, calm itineraries, clear facts on cabins and going ashore

Compass held up against the open sea

Check in once, unpack once and let the hotel travel with you: for many people a cruise is the easiest way to see several cities or countries. Whether it really is relaxed depends on details such as lifts, cabin doors, where the ship docks and how far you need to walk ashore.

This section gathers what to look out for if you travel with a rollator or wheelchair, prefer not to walk far after an operation, travel solo or simply want a calm trip.

River or ocean: which is easier?

River cruiseOcean cruise
Distances on boardShort, the ship is smallLong, but usually several lifts
LiftNot on every ship; sometimes only a stairlift or stairsStandard on large ships
Cabins for reduced mobilityOn some ships, often very fewBookable with many large cruise lines
Getting ashoreUsually central, but the gangway can be steep depending on water levels; ships sometimes moor side by side and you cross another shipTerminal with gangway; tender ports use small boats, which can be difficult or impossible with a wheelchair
RhythmA new place almost every dayPorts alternate with sea days to rest

Facilities vary a lot from ship to ship. Don't rely on general statements; ask about your specific ship and itinerary.

Checklist: what to ask before booking

  • Is there a lift to your cabin deck, the restaurant and the sun deck?
  • How wide is the cabin door; is there a level-access shower and grab rails?
  • How far is the cabin from the lift?
  • Does the itinerary include tender ports, and what happens if you cannot board the tender?
  • Can you bring a rollator, wheelchair or mobility scooter, and does it need to be registered?
  • Are excursions with little walking marked?
  • Are there single cabins or sailings without a single supplement?

Scout tipAsk in writing and have any promises about your cabin, mobility aids and help with embarkation noted in your booking confirmation.
